I walked the Camino de Santiago alone last autumn. 500 miles, 35 days, a pack on my back and no one waiting for me at the end.I had done it before, once, with a partner. That was an adventure. Doing it alone was something else — an extended negotiation with a version of myself I rarely get to meet.The fear I expected — of dangerous strangers, of getting lost, of injury far from help — turned out to be mostly imaginary. I stopped trying to think my way through problems and started walking through them instead. The rhythm of walking — left, right, left, right, twelve hours a day — has a way of composting complicated feelings into something simpler.I arrived in Santiago not enlightened, not transformed, but quieter.
